Creating a genuine zellige table is a long, meticulous process, built on ancestral know-how passed down through generations.
It all begins with a simple, natural material: clay. It is carefully selected, then hand-shaped before being slowly dried in the Moroccan sun. The pieces are then fired in traditional kilns, where the heat reveals the depth and intensity of the glazes, giving rise to rich, vibrant colors.
The work of the Maâlem
At the heart of this process is the Maâlem, the master craftsman.
Using a traditional tool called a menqach, he hand-cuts each tile with remarkable precision. Every small geometric piece, called a furmah, is cut individually to form a perfectly harmonious whole.

The most fascinating stage is undoubtedly the assembly.
The Maâlem lays out hundreds of pieces face down, without seeing the final pattern directly. He works from memory, guided only by his expertise and years of practice.
